Safety Notice

We offer helmets to all track users and strongly recommend that you use them for your own safety.

Please do not adjust any cycles beyond their safety parameters, for example, seat post height.

HCAC cannot accept responsibility or liability for any accident, loss or injury that may result from ignoring this advice.

Cycle Safety

A tailored selection of our cycles are placed out in the car park each day by our staff members. It is impossible to put all of our cycles out at once, and we are therefore more than happy to retrieve any additional cycles needed or wanted by our service users. However, these cycles must be retrieved only by one of our staff members, never a member of the public.

All persons under the biological, or psychological age of eighteen must be supervised by a responsible adult at all times while using a cycle. When using our side-by-side cycles, or our four-seater cycles, a responsible adult must be in control, or be in a position where they can take control of the steering and braking of the cycle the entire time it is in use.

Some of our service users are not able to operate their own cycle, or require dual controls in order to stay safe while cycling. It is the responsibility of a supported persons carer to determine whether or not a service user can safely operate a cycle without the need for dual control. However, if one of our staff members feels that a service user should not be given control over their own cycle for the safety of them or other users, we ask that you follow their advice and take recommended action.

Quite a few of our cycles have safety measures such as straps and seatbelts. They are there for the safety of our users, and so we ask that they be utilised when necessary, or when instructed by one of our staff members.

Should any problems develop with our cycles while in use, we ask that the cycle be returned to reception while observing and enacting any and all due safety measures, and that the issue be reported to one of our staff members immediately.

Track Safety

There is a maximum limit of twenty-five service users on the track at any one time.

We also operate a one-way system on the track from the shelter onwards which we ask all of our service users to observe. This helps us to keep our users safe while out on the track, and to avoid unnecessary collisions.

Supported persons must be escorted by their respective carers to and from the track, and be supervised at all times while out on the track.

While in use, the track is subject to supervision by one of our staff members at any time they deem it necessary. We understand that having some extra freedom is one of the things our users love about our track, so please be assured that any supervision will be as unobtrusive as possible.

Should one of our staff members deem any activity on the track unsafe, they have the right to remove any persons or cycles responsible for the danger. Should this happen, we ask that our staff members are treated with all due respect and civility.

3

Centre Safety

There is a speed limit of five miles-per-hour in place at the centre which must be observed at all times by all vehicles.

Please note that the sheds beyond our garden area are off-limits to service users for their own safety, and members of the public are only permitted to enter them while accompanied by one of our staff members.

We have areas of the centre available for the enjoyment of our service users, such as our recreation room and kitchen area (by prior arrangement only), our garden area, and a playing field, but we ask that all minors are supervised at all times by a responsible adult while in these areas.

Toilet facilities are available in The Old Mill building for our service users. The building is in use during the day, so if you do need to use the facilities, please respect the privacy of others and only enter the sections of the building you are permitted to.

Bringing your own Cycle

You are more than welcome to bring your own cycle and use it on our track, but please be aware that if you choose to do this, our insurance will not cover any loss or damage that you, or your cycle may sustain while in use at our centre, or on our track.

Thank you for reading

Our aim is to bring cycling to everyone, regardless of ability, and we understand that in order to do that, some compromises must be made to make individuals with additional needs feel comfortable. If, and only if these compromises do not affect the safety of our staff or any of our users, and we are made fully aware of these compromises in due notice, we are happy to accommodate them. If you have any questions or concerns regarding any of the information on this page, please get in touch.
